For Immediate Release:

Statement by Ontario Women’s Liberal Commission (OWLC) supporting the preservation of long-gun registry data.

Toronto, ON/ May 18, 2012 – The Ontario Liberal Women’s Commission (OWLC) supports the prevention of destruction of the data from the now defunct long-gun registry. We stand behind the efforts of Toronto City Councillors, Kristyn Wong-Tam and Adam Vaughan to preserve this crucial data which has a direct impact on the safety and well-being of children and women.

The Canadian Government, under Prime Minister Stephen Harper, which repealed the long-gun registry, has claimed that it has done nothing to prevent crime and has sought to criminalize law-abiding gun owners. However, the Canadian Association of Chiefs call it an essential law enforcement tool. Police access the gun registry 11,000 times a day and use it to protect front-line officers and prevent domestic violence and suicide.  Long guns are involved in 70 per cent of gun-related deaths, the victims of which are overwhelmingly women.

Liberal Senator Mobina Jaffer has spoke in favour of the gun registry, saying “As a member of the Canadian Panel on Violence Against Women in the 1990s, I saw first-hand the destruction long guns do to women’s lives.”

The OWLC supports all efforts to retain the data from the long-gun registry and to update it on an ad hoc basis where possible.

The OWLC stands with other organizations in supporting all efforts to prevent violence against women.
